In the afternoon of November 9, 2015, Dr. Tamas Bartfai (Professor of the Scripps Research Institute, USA) met with several dozens of undergraduate and graduate students at School of Pharmacy, Fudan University. This is the second session of an academic salon series entitled “Face-to-Face with the Master” chaired by Dr. Ming-Wei Wang, Dean of the school. Drs. Wei Fu (Assistant Dean) and Xue-Mei Zhang (Assistant Dean), young teachers from Department of Medicinal Chemistry and students from all grades totaling around 40 attended this event.
The ancients said “Do not pretend to know what you do not know; know what one really understands”. In the life of scientific research, Dr. Bartfai thinks that knowing and understanding are two different things. He alerted the students that they should not take it for granted to ignore the “simple” thing, as long as focusing on the fundamental questions, even in the most competitive field you may still discover something. For drug development, one should balance safety concern with social issues. In discussing the future prospects of medicinal chemistry, he spoke with excitement accompanied by body languages that express his enthusiasm and passion. In the end, he gave his two books as gifts to all the students who participated in the salon with his signature: 1) Drug Discovery from Bedside to Wall Street; 2) The Future of Drug Discovery: Who Decides Which Diseases to Treat?
