        1981年毕业于北京大学医学院,获医学硕士学位。1993年毕业于澳大利亚西澳大利亚大学(UWA),获博士学位。1993年-2012年任职香港理工大学应用生物化学系讲师,助理教授,副教授,教授等,以及香港理工大学深圳现代中药研究所副所长和香港理工大学动物资源中心主任及管理委员会主席。2012年9月至今任职复旦大学特聘教授(全职)。同时,担任中国制药工业药理学会副主任委员,中国应用药理学会理事,和国际生物医药与生物技术学会(IABB) 副理事长。曾先后担任美国耶鲁大学访问教授、北京大学、浙江大学、中国科学院北京生物物理所联合培养计划博士生导师。长期从事“脑铁代谢及相关疾病机理与神经药理学”领域的研究。至今发表论文289篇,其中SCI论文145篇,总影响因子大于650,他引大于6200次。获药物相关专利13项(另10项处于审批阶段)、保健食品注册批件6件、主编铁代谢专著2部、参编5部。获2009年度“何梁何利基金科学与技术进步奖(医学与药学组)”等奖项。目前承担国家973(课题组长/骨干)和国家自然科学基金重点和面上等项目。
